An Exhibition by Kim Tucker

Artist Talk: Tuesday, March 10 at 3 p.m. in the University Art Gallery
The University Art Gallery at CSU Dominguez Hills proudly presents “Sunday Morning,” an exhibition of new work by Los Angeles-based artist Kim Tucker. Derived from a concentrated residency on the university campus, the exhibition presents this new sculptural work along with a series of drawings.
In “Sunday Morning,” Kim Tucker’s family of characters come to life in the form of ceramic sculptures and ink drawings. The characters are extremely lively, seemingly childlike naïve figures contemplating the difficulties of human interactions. Tucker’s objects exhibit the person-wrought handcraft proudly– the result of very physical gestures by the artist. Her hand is visible in the work. The sensuality meets and reinforces the caught-in-the-moment actions the characters perform in both the sculptures and the drawings. Tucker uses this layering of the handmade and the psychological to create characters that emanate both the joy of play and the interior emotional struggles that are the tension of the human experience.
During her intensive artist residency at CSU Dominguez Hills, Tucker not only took advantage of the larger footprints of the University’s ceramics facilities, she also used her time on campus to allow herself to be experimental. The artist created nearly a piece a day while in residence and “Sunday Morning” presents the work of this fruitful experience.
“Sunday Morning” opens on Saturday, February 15 and remains on view through Saturday, March 21, 2020. The public is invited to the opening reception on Saturday, February 15 from 3-6 p.m.

About Kim Tucker
Kim Tucker studied Ceramic Sculpture under the direction of Viola Frey and Arthur Gonzalez at the California College of Arts and Crafts, graduating with High Distinction. Kim then went on to receive her M.F.A under the guidance of M.J. Bole from The Ohio State University. She has been invited to artist residencies including Futur, Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts, Mount St. Mary’s University and Belden Brick Factory. Kim has shown her work at institutions including Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Garboushian Gallery, TchotchkeLA and the American Museum of Ceramic Arts.
