Genesys Hernandez is a first-generation Mexican American artist from Lynwood, CA, and a burn survivor. Her work primarily consists of self-portraits, in the form of paintings and drawings, that reflect both the devastation and resilience developed from unexpected life occurrences. Through her art, Hernandez orchestrates psychological spaces that connect her Nayarit, Mexico heritage with the positives and negatives of burn trauma and recovery. Through her art, she reconstructs memories, feelings, and facts from her life-changing trauma, both remembered and forgotten. Despite the psychological and physical devastation provoked by her accident, Hernandez perseveres and creates pieces that serve as a testament to the strength of the human spirit.
Hernandez has received scholarships from the Phoenix Burn Survivor Society (2018), El Nido Family Center (2017-2022), and the Los Angeles Commission for Women’s “Women’s Resilience Educational Scholarship” (2022). She presented a solo exhibition at Lynwood Union Gallery and participated in group exhibitions at Cerritos College, Winston Hewitt Studio, and Lynwood Linear Park. Hernandez has earned an Associate of Arts (AA) in Studio Arts from Cerritos College (2020) and will have received her B.A. in Art from California State University Dominguez Hills in 2023.
